A Snake Lounges on Warm Gravel

Given the size of the property, you'd think a snake would be a common sighting. However, it hasn't been for me. When we first moved here, I found a rather large snake skin in the field, no snake. Another time I saw a small garter snake hiding under a piece of wood. One season, a small snake use to hang out in the pond with its head just above the water. I assumed it was preying on our goldfish.

Glen, on the other hand, has seen snakes a few times out on his walks. Yesterday he found this beauty lounging on the gravel in our driveway. I think it's a gopher snake. Despite its name, a gopher snake eats more than gophers (which AFAIK we don't have). Voles, mice, frogs, bird eggs, insects, and lizards are the creatures we have and that the snake will eat. Given the number of these critter that live here, I'm surprised we don't see more snakes.
