An Encounter With a Skink

Today I decided to clean up the firewood staging area. Now that we have heat pumps in all our buildings, the need for wood to supplement our heat has decreased. We are also getting a whole-property generator installed, so the need for using wood stoves is almost nil. If there is a power outage lasting more than a week will we need the wood fallback, but if it lasts that long, we are likely to hop in the car and drive elsewhere.

I plan to purchase a small resin shed to store emergency firewood. Then I can get the extra firewood chipped or hauled away. Towards that end, I pulled all the wood covers to a staging area to be taken to the land fill. Most of the covers were shredded and falling apart due to the harsh winter. Then I dragged all the large, empty garbage cans we used to store kindling into one area. When I did that, I unearthed a creature that I had never seen before--a blue-tailed California skink. He sat motionless, hoping I wouldn't see him. I had to walk back to the cabin to get my camera to take this shot. He was still there, but as soon as I started the video capture, he scampered off. What a beauty!
