Spring is Just Around the Corner

This evening, as I walked to my cabin, I was delighted to see six tom turkeys. Every year, between mid-November and early December, the turkeys that frequent our property disappear. They’re typically gone by Thanksgiving, which makes me wonder if they have an instinctive understanding of America’s penchant for eating turkey in November. But just before the start of spring, the toms reappear. Within a month, I expect to see hens. And after that, I hope to see baby turkeys.

I’m not sure if any of these six toms were here last year, but they seemed to recognize me enough not to run away. I tossed out some Songbird Select bird seed, expecting them to rush toward it like they did last year. Instead, they were hesitant, keeping their distance until I stepped back. Slowly, they sampled the seed—then dove in. Now, I expect they’ll associate me with food and become my best friends—well, at least from six feet away. The turkeys seem to be a bit touchy about Thanksgiving, so they’ll never get close enough for contact.

Flowers are another sure sign of spring in the mountains. Our daffodils are growing every day, and some are already showing signs of budding. Within a month, they should be in full bloom.

Tiny green plants are beginning to emerge, dotting the ground with fresh growth. I don’t know what they are yet, but I hope some will turn out to be wildflowers.

Given how much moisture remains in the ground, I expected to see plenty of mushrooms on my walk around the property. Instead, I spotted just one poking through the leaves. Of course, I didn’t bring a rake with me—I suspect many more are hiding under the fallen leaves, waiting to be discovered.

The birds are also gearing up for spring. Many are already singing their spring songs, including the Northern Flicker and the Juncos. Robins have been migrating through, adding to the sonic landscape. The smaller birds have been eating a lot of Songbird Select seed, a sure sign they’re preparing to raise chicks. Unlike the turkeys, they sing for their supper—so the extra investment in birdseed feels well worth it!

With spring just around the corner, it’s time to buy potting soil and plant seeds. What a glorious season!
