The Season of Tiny Flowers

Writer's picture: Camp CougarCamp Cougar

When I moved here many years ago, I dreamed of having fields of wild flowers—a riot of color visible from a distance. For years I have been tossing out seeds--cannisters of poppy seeds from Janice's Mom, seed balls from Hoy, packets of seeds that I purchased. This year, I sowed 1/4 pound of mixed California wildflowers along with a few more packets of poppies.

I don't think many of the seeds I've sown have actually come up. I found out that poppies can lay dormant for 10 years! But every year at this time, there are thousands, of very tiny wildflowers, They are not apparent until I am practically stepping on them, but they are abundant. I snapped some images today with my phone. Many of these flowers are about one-quarter of an inch in diameter. The smaller ones--of which there were many varieties--I was not able to photograph as they need a macro lens. Perhaps I'll haul out that camera later this week.

Only three poppies! Where are the rest?

Oops! Waving in the breeze, so these purple ones are a little fuzzy. There are big patches of these by our gate.

Lots of these all over the property.

This pink one is about three-quarters of an inch in diameter. Big!

Huge patches on these white flowers on the water well hill.
